The slowdown of the Houston economy is picking up speed.

The slowdown of the Houston economy is picking up speed.

After setting a torrid pace less than a year ago, the local economy is barely adding new jobs now. At the same time, the unemployment rate has shot up, and so has the number of first-time filers for jobless benefits.

Houston-area employers created 17,200 new jobs between January 2008 and January 2009, according to data released Thursday by the Texas Workforce Commission. That 0.7 percent year-over-year increase was the weakest since the summer of 2004 and doesn’t include the large layoffs already announced in Galveston at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospital for Children.

It’s a sharp departure from just a year ago, when Houston gained 87,400 jobs in the preceding year for a robust 3.5 percent clip.

“I think we’re headed to negative territory in just a few months,” said Barton Smith, director of the University of Houston’s Institute for Regional Forecasting. “By May or June they’ll be negative.”

Weaker hiring coupled with a spike in the number of folks looking for work caused the local jobless rate to jump to 6.5 percent in January, its highest level since July 2004, according to the commission. In December, the rate was 5.6 percent.

The rate is also climbing statewide. In January, the Texas unemployment rate was 6.4 percent, which commission Chairman Tom Pauken expects to grow to 8 percent later this year. Statewide data is seasonally adjusted while local data is not.

“It’s occurring a little faster than we thought,” said Smith, referring to the slowdown that has been especially hard on retailers and financial firms.
New figures due today

While the strong energy industry buffered Houston during 2008, Smith predicts the city soon will lose that cushion. As world economic conditions deteriorate and reduce the demand for energy, he expects widespread job cuts in oil field equipment manufacturing, a key industry for Houston.

The layoffs are still relatively mild but they’ll pick up during the year, he said.

“The national economic storm has hit us,” said Pauken, who spoke with the Houston Chronicle’s editorial board Thursday.

The unemployment rates in Houston and Texas are still better than the U.S. figure, which stood at 7.6 percent in January and rose to 8.1 percent in February, according to federal statistics released today.

Pauken pointed to the spike in initial claims for unemployment benefits that has made it difficult for out-of-work Texans to get through on the busy phone lines to file for benefits. The commission is adding phone capacity to handle the calls, he said.

He pointed to the spike in initial claims for unemployment benefits that has made it difficult for out-of-work Texans to get through on the busy phone lines to file for benefits. The commission is adding phone capacity to handle the calls, he said.

In January, 26,828 Houston-area residents filed initial claims for unemployment benefits. That’s up 24.4 percent from December, when 21,567 residents requested benefits, and nearly double the number of applicants a year ago.
Previous report revised

It’s not uncommon to see job losses from December to January because companies are cutting holiday help and evaluating budgets, said Joel Wagher, labor market analyst for Workforce Solutions, which manages employment services, education and training for the area.

But this time losses were higher than usual because of the struggling economy, he said. It was the worst one-month employment decline in the last 10 years, he said.

Also, the latest report included the annual revision of the previous year’s estimates. Houston’s job base didn’t grow nearly as quickly as the commission thought.

In January, the commission estimated the Houston area added 57,300 new jobs between December 2007 and December 2008, a 2.2 percent increase. But once actual payroll tax records were tallied, the area gained only 22,500 jobs during that time for a 0.9 percent increase.

Houston’s annual job growth peaked last June at 4.6 percent. It has declined ever since, Wagher said.

VSEP Membrane Cleaners In addition to filtration systems, New Logic manufactures a complete line of chemical cleaners designed to maintain maximum flow rates in all VSEP applications.Years of exhaustive research and development by New Logic engineers have resulted in seven chemical cleaners formulated to attack the most stubborn foulants across a wide range of membranes and feed streams. While designed for VSEP membrane filtration systems, these advanced formulas are perfect for cleaning any membrane. To learn more about VSEP Advanced Cleaning Solutions, please choose a link below to visit our sister site http://www.membranecleaner.com/.

While membrane-based separations of liquids from solids have enjoyed increasing popularity over the last 20 years, the technology has an inherent Achilles heel that affects all membrane devices: fouling. This long-term loss in throughput capacity is due primarily to the formation of a boundary layer that builds up naturally on the membranes surface during the filtration process. In addition to cutting down on the flux performance of the membrane, this boundary or gel layer acts as a secondary membrane reducing the native design selectivity of the membrane in use.

High-Efficiency Generators for Hybrid Vehicles

Free-piston engines could be used to generate electricity as efficiently as, and less expensively than, fuel cells. An unconventional engine design is attracting attention as a potential alternative to hydrogen fuel cells or conventional engines in some hybrid vehicles. Called the free-piston engine, it could be used to generate electricity as efficiently as fuel cells yet cost less.Free-piston engines aren't new: they were invented in the 1920s. But the increased recent focus on hybrid cars has led a growing number of research groups and automakers to start research programs to develop the technology. Unlike in conventional engines, there is no mechanical connection between the piston and a crankshaft (hence the name free-piston). Since the design allows for improved combustion and less friction, the engines could be far more efficient in generating electricity than either conventional generators or newer fuel-cell technology.Having a cheap and efficient way to generate electricity is becoming more important as automakers develop electric vehicles with onboard generators for recharging the battery pack and extending range. Such vehicles, called series plug-in hybrids or extended-range electric vehicles, are to be sold starting in late 2010. (Click here for a comparison of different hybrid and electric vehicle types.) The first will use generators based on conventional engines. But later models could incorporate fuel cells or other unconventional generators, such as free-piston engines. The potential high efficiency of free-piston engines gives them an advantage over conventional generators, and their ability to use a variety of fuels is an advantage over hydrogen fuel cells. What's more, free-piston engines don't require expensive materials such as the platinum catalysts needed in fuel cells, so they could be cheaper too.Automakers such as GM, Lotus, and Volvo have started to investigate the possibility of using such engines in future vehicles. Meanwhile, in the past couple of years, an increasing number of academic research teams have started developing the engines. So far, most have focused on computer simulations. An exception is a research group at Sandia National Laboratory led by Sandia researcher Peter Van Blarigan that has been testing physical components of free-piston engines. He is assembling a complete free-piston engine prototype, a project that he expects to complete within a year.In conventional internal combustion engines, multiple pistons are connected via rods to a crankshaft that, via the transmission, drives the wheels. Free-piston engines do away with the crankshaft: the pistons aren't connected to anything. Instead, two opposing pistons just shuttle back and forth inside a chamber. To generate electricity, the pistons could be equipped with rows of magnets that shuttle past metal coils to create an electrical current.Van Blarigan's experiments suggest that these engines could be 50 percent efficient at generating electricity--close to the efficiency of hydrogen fuel cells and much more efficient than conventional generators. Free-piston engines are efficient in part because they have fewer moving parts than conventional engines do. The engine configuration also makes it practical to tune the engine so that the fuel in a combustion chamber burns very quickly. Faster combustion allows the engine to get more work out of a given amount of fuel, improving efficiency. It can also improve emissions. The free-piston design can also allow the engine to be instantly optimized for different fuels, such as hydrogen, natural gas, ethanol, gasoline, and diesel. Ideally, drivers could use whatever fuel is cheap and readily available. The development of free-piston engines, however, is still at an early stage. "The free-piston has some unique desginby kuzey...features--simplicity and variable compression--which make it intriguing," says Gary Smyth, the science director of GM's Powertrain Systems Research Lab. "But [they] also pose a number of challenges."Van Blarigan says that one major concern is the sound of the engines: the fast explosions are very loud and will be difficult to muffle. But perhaps the biggest issue is control. In a conventional engine, the movement of the pistons is constrained by the rods and crankshaft, which help even out any variations from cycle to cycle. The free-piston engine is more flexible. That allows for using different fuels, but it makes necessary some sort of active control mechanism to ensure that each cycle is the same: variations could cause poor performance and increased emissions. High-speed computers and the ability to electronically control piston movement in a free-piston generator (via the coils and magnets) could help engineers solve this problem.Whether the engines will be significantly cheaper and more efficient than conventional engines is unclear, says John Heywood, a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. "There's been enough development to say that it works. But with very different engine geometries, it's hard to work out just how good it is. Is it really better?" As research progresses, it will need to answer questions about efficiency, emissions, performance, and especially cost, Heywood says.Meanwhile, conventional internal combustion engines keep getting better, which could make it difficult for the

WENESCO

ABOUT WENESCO MELTERS: All of our melters are made according to a basic design. The material to be heated is contained in a liner (crucible). Heater elements are then placed adjacent to the liner. The liner and heater elements are surrounded by insulation. Finally, a steel or stainless steel housing contains the entire assembly. Heater elements are easily replaced by the user.

The design of the melter varies with the melting temperature and chemical characteristics of the material to be heated.

Wax compounds, hot melt, soap, and other thermoplastics, in the 80F to 450F range are best heated using convection type heating elements and low-watt density band heaters. Many of our melters feature power control in addition to an accurate thermostat to maximize even heating. A heated dispensing valve is usually provided. A stirrer may be added to assure consistency in a blend.

Melters, in the 80F to 1000F range are widely used to melt solder, babbit, pewter, tin, lead and other soft metals. These melters are carefully insulated to preserve energy and maintain operator safety. Pot liners are available to handle “lead free” alloys and salt compounds.

Larger melters are available in electric, natural gas, or propane versions. Gas melters usually cost more to buy than electric models, but depending upon power costs in your area, may cost less to operate,
